2026-10-31 — Fir exists
No release today. Just a decision about what this project is, written down before it drifts.
Fir is a minimal source-based distribution and a premade rice. The two halves are the point: the desktop is already configured when you boot it, and everything behind it is small enough to read. It is not trying to become a distribution people rely on. It is one person's machine, packaged well enough to hand over.
What changed:
- Cut the idea of a file that declares the whole system. It was starting to turn into a worse Nix, and Fir is supposed to be simple. Hand-editing files is the configuration.
- The tagline is now Fir is real. It is a recursive acronym, which is the only kind of claim this project can currently back up.
- The front page says plainly what Fir is not, so nobody arrives expecting an installer that is not there.
- The package page is labelled as a mock-up rather than presented as a tree.
Next is the build loop: a seed, a chroot, a package with a file manifest, an install, a base tarball. Until that loop closes there is nothing here worth downloading. When it closes, it gets announced on this page first.
